**Brown Leaf: Turning Dry Leaves from Waste into a Resource** Brown Leaf is a citizen-led initiative working towards a simple but ambitious goal: **Not a single dry leaf should be burnt in India.** Every year, millions of dry leaves are treated as waste and burnt, causing air pollution, loss of valuable organic matter, and unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions. Brown Leaf promotes eco-friendly alternatives such as mulching, composting, leaf moulding, and resource recovery, helping citizens, institutions, housing societies, and businesses manage dry leaves within their own premises whenever possible. The platform also encourages and facilitates connections between people who have excess dry leaves and those who can use them productively, including gardeners, composters, urban farmers, and farmers on the outskirts of Pune. In its very first year, Brown Leaf helped exchange over **10,000 gunny bags of dry leaves**. Since then, the movement has grown significantly, with exchanges running into **lakhs of bags**, preventing countless instances of leaf burning. Importantly, Brown Leaf is **not a leaf collection or donation platform**. We encourage people to explore and connect with "leaf-takers" in their own neighbourhoods and communities, creating local solutions that can be sustained and replicated anywhere. The idea is to build a decentralized network where every locality finds its own pathways for using dry leaves as a valuable resource.
