Brown Leaf promotes eco-friendly alternatives such as mulching, composting, leaf moulding, and resource recovery, helping citizens, institutions, housing societies, and businesses manage dry leaves within their own premises whenever possible. The platform also encourages and facilitates connections between people who have excess dry leaves and those who can use them productively, including gardeners, composters, urban farmers, and farmers on the outskirts of Pune. In its very first year, Brown Leaf helped exchange over **10,000 gunny bags of dry leaves**. Since then, the movement has grown significantly, with exchanges running into **lakhs of bags**, preventing countless instances of leaf burning. Importantly, Brown Leaf is **not a leaf collection or donation platform**. We encourage people to explore and connect with "leaf-takers" in their own neighbourhoods and communities, creating local solutions that can be sustained and replicated anywhere. The idea is to build a decentralized network where every locality finds its own pathways for using dry leaves as a valuable resource. As an industrial designer and entrepreneur, I believe design thinking and a creative approach towards new sustainable materials is the future as they will help us survive as a species. We at WITCHCRAFT aim at using biomass to create home décor and lifestyle accessory products. One of our early sources of material is water hyacinth. By using water hyacinth, we focus on cleaning the river bodies by taking out the waste weed to create by products. Water hyacinth is an alien species which grows in abundance and damages the aquatic life under, so controlling the growth becomes necessary. Water hyacinth has no value in water we do value addition to the waste by taking it out of the water as the plant finds it use in the textile industry. We design, manufacture footwear made out of water hyacinth. We also use banana fibre to make lifestyle accessory and home décor products. We are trying to provide an alternative to faux materials used for the fast fashion industry. One of our early raw material sources apart from water hyacinth is Banana fibre. Banana stocks are dumped in the fields. Once the fruit is cut the stock is cut off and dumped. Banana stock being thick, doesn’t get disintegrated quickly. Our products are handmade we provide income opportunities for women coming from rural areas by training them as artisans to make them more self-reliant and independent.
